Bowing wall requiring helical tieback reinforcement

Helical Tiebacks: Engineered Wall Stabilization

Helical tiebacks are steel rods with helical plates installed through the foundation wall into stable soil. They provide engineered resistance to lateral soil pressure on bowing or leaning walls.

Bowing wall requiring helical tieback reinforcement

Helical tiebacks function similarly to wall anchors but use a helical (screw-type) anchor instead of a plate anchor. A steel rod with welded helical plates is rotated through the foundation wall and into the soil beyond until it reaches stable, load-bearing material.

The helical design provides predictable, measurable anchor capacity. Torque readings taken during installation directly correlate to the holding strength of the tieback, giving engineers precise data about the system's performance.

Helical tiebacks are particularly effective in situations where the soil immediately outside the foundation is too soft or saturated for conventional earth anchors. The helical plates can penetrate through problem soil to reach competent bearing material at greater distances.

Like wall anchors, helical tiebacks can be periodically tightened to gradually straighten bowing walls. The installation is minimally invasive and most projects are completed within 1-2 days.

Key Benefits

  • Measurable installation torque confirms anchor capacity
  • Effective in poor soil conditions beyond the wall
  • Can stabilize and gradually straighten walls
  • Minimally invasive installation
  • Engineered with documented load data
  • Works for both residential and commercial walls
